A DECADE AGO, comedienne Rita Rudner took her experiences of making people laugh on stage and turned them into the comic novel, Tickled Pink. Now her story is leaving the pages and being performed for the first time this spring at the Laguna Playhouse.
Tickled Pink is a work of fiction, but mirrors Rudner’s life in showbiz. After working her way up and appearing in several Broadway shows in the ‘70s, including Follies and Mack and Mabel, Rudner made her last pre-comedian Broadway appearance in 1980 as Lily St. Regis in Annie.
Since then she’s been making a name for herself in comedy clubs across the world.
The story of Ticked Pink follows Mindy Solomon. Dreaming of a dancing career on Broadway, she moves to New York, but events soon force her to rethink her grand plan.
Spending way too much time in the comedy club where her future ex-boyfriend works, Mindy nervously goes up on stage one night. People laugh. Not in the places where Mindy thought they’d laugh, but hey, it’s a start.
“This play is for anyone who likes to laugh and has ever had a friend.” Rudner says, as the play examines stand-up comedy and the support of one particular female friendship.
Rita Rudner and her creative partner and husband Martin Bergman wrote the play, which is fashioned after Rudner’s book. She says it was his support that helped her consider bringing the story to the stage.
“It was his idea, and he clearly has a track record of success. Who am I to tell him no?” Rudner asked.
Tickled Pink at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Road in Laguna Beach, runs Tuesday, April 24 through Sunday, May 20.
